Hiking the Leslie-Karamea Track
One of several iconic swing bridges on the track.
Surely this one’s on every locals’ bucket list, right?? The Leslie-Karamea is one hell of an adventure! Starting in the majestic high country, this multi-day hike passes through the beating heart of Kahurangi National Park and pops out on the magical west coast.
DOC describes the track as advanced and suitable for experienced trampers, and usually takes 6-9 days to complete. Expect numerous river and stream crossings which can become impassable after heavy rain. The track can be technical, boggy, hard to navigate and covered in treefall. Are we selling it yet??
Despite its challenges, the Leslie-Karamea rewards the intrepid tramper – beautiful, diverse terrain, undisturbed forest full of birdlife, top-notch huts and proper backcountry solitude (no summer crowds out here!).
Distance: 91km one-way
Elevation: +3340 -4210
Let’s be real, logistics are a little tricky at the moment. With Flora carpark closed, the usual route up to the Tablelands and the start of the track is inaccessible (unless you fancy a stroll up the road from the slip zone). Other options include the Ellis Basin Route, Baton River Route or via Myttons Hut in the Cobb Valley. If you’re not keen on a west coast return trip, we’d recommend heading back along the Wangapeka Track (about 55km in, just past Trevor Carter Hut) which will pop you out near Mount Owen. Pull out your topos maps and get planning nerds!
Trip reports regularly state that the DOC times are super optimistic – even seasoned trampers take longer than expected on certain sections! If you’re usually pretty speedy, consider adding at least a day to your expectations. Currently, the section from Venus to Trevor Carter is pretty overgrown and tough going, and there may be additional treefall and high rivers with all this crazy weather we’ve been experiencing!
It’s a new year, with new adventures on the horizon! Push your comfort zone, plan that solo trip, book in a tramp with mates and really make the most of our amazing backyard <3
